SUMMARY:Rainbow Sangha
DESCRIPTION:Who we are\nAs people identifying under this umbrella\, we may face challenges and discrimination within ourselves and from the outside. Our wish is to support each other and to acknowledge our own uniqueness and connectedness. \nWe co-create a mindful space where we can equally share our pain and our joy\, where we don’t need to assess risks of showing who we truly are or edit the queerness of our experience for the perceived benefit of others. We enjoy being joyfully together. \nWhat we do\nWithin Rainbow Sangha\, we have created a space that’s welcoming and open to anyone interested in the practice of mindfulness. Some of us have been practising for years and others are just starting out on their path of practice. We are mindful to explain and explore how we practice so that we all can benefit. \nMeeting on Zoom has allowed our sangha to be open to all\, regardless of location\, and we welcome participants from around the globe. Most of us join with our video enabled but some join only with audio\, whatever works best for each person. \nAs well as our weekly Rainbow Sangha\, we have a gender diverse sangha which meets monthly\, and a study group which meets twice a month. \nWhat we say\nIt is a very friendly\, warm\, and supportive community. What amazes me especially is how diverse it is: every part of the LGBTQIA+ spectrum seems to be represented\, and there is also a wide range of ages and life experiences. This makes the process of dharma sharing incredibly rich. \n— Mark S\, gay\, cis-gendered male\, age 65 \nit is no exaggeration to say Plum Village and this Sangha have transformed my life for the better. It is a great source of comfort\, stability and happiness for me. It is very welcoming\, kind and supportive\, like a big warm hug. \n— Jules\, cis-gendered lesbian\, age 48 \nRainbow Sangha is a place where I feel safe and allows me to be me! We practice deep listening and Dharma sharing\, meditation and Thay’s teachings and I feel valued\, accepted and loved! I love my new virtual family!! \n— Julie (she/her) \nThe welcome\, warmth and wisdom of friends from across the spectrum has nourished me to grow in myself and the support and sharing is an inspiration. A simply joyous space. \n— K8 MacKenzie – she/her \nThe sangha is a truly welcoming\, warm\, honest and nurturing space and it’s so beautiful to see friendly diverse faces each week and to share time together. \n— Natalie \nI really like the fact that the sangha is completely rainbow spectrum Inclusive especially as for TNB people for whom diverse sexuality is also relevant. \nGary \n  \nJoining Us\nPlease email us at rainbowsanghauk@gmail.com for more information on Rainbow Sangha and how you can join us.

SUMMARY:Diamond Moon Sangha
DESCRIPTION:Diamond Moon Sangha – Vajra Chandra Sangha ()\nA Sangha for Disabled (Dis) and Neurodiverse (ND) practitioners following the teachings of Ven. Thich Nhat Hanh\, Sisters\, Brothers and Siblings of Plum Village. \nIn our Sangha\, we embrace a mindful approach to navigating the challenges of disability and neurodiversity\, inspired by the teachings of Ven. Thich Nhat Hanh\, the Buddha\, and the practices of Plum Village. \nWe understand that pain\, whether physical or emotional\, is a natural part of life. Through mindfulness\, we learn to observe our differences with a gentle and non-judgemental awareness\, transforming our relationship with them. \nMindful Approach to Disability & Neurodiversity\nWe recognise the interconnectedness of mind and body\, and the interbeing nature of our experiences through a “disabled body or neurodiverse lens”. \nInterbeing\, a term from Thich Nhat Hanh’s teachings\, refers to the interconnectedness of all things\, the understanding that nothing exists in isolation\, and every experience is shaped by countless conditions. \nViewing the world and our experiences through our unique perspectives as disabled and neurodiverse individuals\, acknowledging how our bodies and minds interact with the environment and society. \nThis holistic view helps us to understand and respond to difficulties and pain\, as well as to the joys. Enhancing the positives and supporting and working through the challenges of sharing the body and mind\, broadening how we relate to our place in the cosmos. \nA Safe and Accessible Environment for All\nOur Sangha is a space where everyone can practise together\, regardless of their diagnosis. We are committed to creating an accessible and supportive environment\, where each member feels seen\, heard\, and valued. \nTo ensure inclusivity\, we offer online meetings with captioning\, sensory-friendly spaces\, and flexible participation options to accommodate diverse needs\, fostering a community of compassion. \nThe Sangha name ‘Diamond Moon’ refers to the zen guidance of “the finger pointing at the moon” which is a metaphor that illustrates the distinction between teachings (the finger) and the ultimate reality or truth (the moon) they point to. The diamond’s facets illustrate the various aspects of ND and Dis lived experience \nZoom Instructions\nPlease email for the Zoom link: connect@diamondmoonsangha.com\n

SUMMARY:Mindful Morning: Two Rivers One Spring
DESCRIPTION:In this Mindful Morning\, Gary Greenberg explores the relationship between the Christian tradition and the Plum Village tradition of mindfulness. Taking a respectful and honest approach\, the talk highlights both the important differences and the deep parallels between the two traditions\, before reflecting on what each might learn from the other. Drawing on personal experience and years of practice\, Gary offers a thoughtful perspective on how these two spiritual paths can enrich our understanding of compassion\, presence and transformation. \n\nOn the first Sunday of every month\, we offer a Morning of Mindfulness led by UK Lay Dharma Teachers\, Members of the Order of Interbeing\, Monastic Dharma Teachers and special guests. \nThe morning will typically include a guided meditation\, followed by a talk or panel. After a short break\, there will be an opportunity for Dharma sharing in groups. \n  \nMain image by Maria Baltazzi on Unsplash

SUMMARY:White Awareness Sangha
DESCRIPTION:This is an opportunity for Plum Village UK sangha members who are interested in practicing together and reflecting on what being racialised as white means. \nThe White Awareness sangha meetings offer an open\, compassionate space of deep listening and loving speech where we can explore how we can recognise and transform racism\, both overt and unconscious\, in ourselves and the communities we move in. \nWe will include time for sitting meditation\, a reflective reading or talk\, and a time for sharing. \nPractising together to look deeply at what a white identity means to us can help us embrace and transform the ancestral suffering within us and around us – as well as helping us grow inclusive sanghas where all people can find a home. These sessions are focused on the specific roles\, responsibilities and experiences of being racialised as white. \nResources\nOur white awareness sangha meets following the Call to Love in Action shared by ARISE Plum Village Sangha. \nAfrican American Dharma teacher Ruth King writes about the benefit of racial affinity groups here. \n

SUMMARY:Looking Deeply - Online 6 week course
DESCRIPTION:Schedule\nThursday 7 – 9 PM UK Time\n17 & 24 Sep\n1\, 8\, 15 & 22 Oct \n\n  \n\n  \nAbout the Course\nLooking Deeply is a 6-week follow on course from The Art of Zen (formerly called “Be Calm Be Happy”) in which we can refresh and extend our practice in the Plum Village tradition. \nWe do this most beneficially as a Sangha\, a group of people coming together to practise and support one another on the journey. \nWe go deeper into Thich Nhat Hanh’s teachings\, helping us to become more aware of our territory of body\, feelings\, mind and consciousness. We discover how to take mindfulness further into our daily lives. \nWhat to Expect\nSessions are online via Zoom. In each\, we meditate together\, consider the weekly theme\, and undertake a reflection exercise looking at its relevance to us\, with time for group discussion. \nThere will be recommended meditations from the Plum Village App to use during the week. You can install the Plum Village App here \nYou will get the most from this course if you regularly practise the meditations and reflect on the weekly theme between each session. The Plum Village App will be a valuable resource to support this. \nThemes for the sessions: \n\nArriving Home\nMindfulness of the Body\nMindfulness of Feelings\nMindfulness of the Mind\nImpermanence\nConnectedness\n\nFormat\nThe course is at the same time every week. You will meet with the same group each time. \nThis is a live\, interactive course\, without any recorded sessions to download. \nEach session lasts two hours. \nWho can attend?\nThis course is only suitable for those with some experience already. If looking for an introduction to Plum Village practices\, Zen or meditation\, we recommend the Art of Zen course instead. \nOur expectation is that you have either attended an Art of Zen course or that you have experience of practising in the Plum Village tradition with a Sangha. \nThe course is suitable for those of all faiths and none. Participants come from a wide range of backgrounds. \nTicket Pricing\nIn offering a range of ticket prices we aim to make the course available to all. \nSponsor £200.00\nSupports those on a lower income to attend \nSupporter £160.00\nSupports us in offering concessionary places. \nStandard £130.00\nOur break-even price. Please pay this if you are able to. \nConcession £95.00\nif you are on a low income. \nSupported £30.00\nIf you are unemployed or unable to work. \nRefund Policy\nIf you cancel your booking at least 14 days before the start of the course we will refund your course fee. SUMMARY:Earth Care Sangha
DESCRIPTION:Earth Care Sangha – A Sangha For Our Times\nWe have to wake up together — Thich Nhat Hanh \nMany of us are aware that we live in times of great peril for life on Earth but also of great promise for change. It is easy to be overwhelmed by feelings of helplessness\, despair and sorrow for what is being done to the Earth. But by practising together we can make a positive difference\, and strengthen our resilience and joy. In response to our individual and collective need to do something\, Earth Care Sangha is offered. \nIn small Dharma sharing groups we can explore our feelings and speak openly in the company of others who share our concerns\, safe in the knowledge that we do this without judgement or conflict. We hope that by sharing freely in this way\, we can help each other find concrete ways to transform and heal\, cultivate joy\, and strengthen our understanding of interbeing with Mother Earth. \nGrounded in the Plum Village tradition\, and with close links to the Earth Care Steering Group\, Earth Care Sangha is truly a sangha for these times. We invite you to join us\, enjoy the practices\, and help shape its future. Let’s wake up together! \nPlease email earthcare@plumvillage.uk with any feedback\, questions\, suggestions or offers of help. \n\nEarth Care Resources\n\nDownloadable resources for holding your own Earth caring sangha meeting\nAdditional Earth Care Resources\n\n\n  \nPhoto by NASA on Unsplash \n  \n\nGuided Meditation: The Four Elements | Sister Chan Duc

SUMMARY:Playing with Mindfulness and Creativity - Online 6 week course
DESCRIPTION:Schedule\nEvery Wednesday 7 – 9 PM\n14\, 21 & 28 Oct\n3. 11 & 18 Nov \n\nJoin me for a 6-week online Mindfulness and Creativity Course\, in which the only requirement is curiosity! \nAre you ready for a courageous dive into creative play without any expectations? \nLet yourself become a child again who picks up a crayon to make marks with no thought of whether it depicts accurately what they are seeing or what they intend. \n\nTogether we can go on a creative adventure involving words and images and the natural world around us. By consciously putting ourselves in a place of receptivity through meditation and community we can record what we connect with in words and simple images. \nWe can open ourselves up to receiving the magic that is available through creativity and playfully explore what is speaking to us. Inviting more curiosity than fear\, we can meet the edges of our comfort zones with kindness and self-compassion and gently challenge ourselves to soften those boundaries as we allow our natural creativity to play. \nMy particular forms of creativity are to play with words (that often become poems) and art\, through simple drawing and playing with paper collage. In this 6-session course we will play with these forms in a gentle guided way. \nYou’ll notice I’m using the word ‘play’ a lot! That’s because as adults we often forget to play\, or think we’ve grown out of it\, or feel that other things are more important. Yet just playing can spark so many different avenues\, if only we let it. Signing up for this 6-week course is giving yourself permission to play. \nI will offer some simple guided exercises as the starting point for creativity. \nI invite you to join me and to creatively discover what happens when you give yourself time and space to play. The rhythm of our sessions will be supported by short guided meditations and the sound of the bell. \nImportant\nBefore the start of the course I will send a small pack of collage and other papers for your use. \nThere is a list of suggested art materials but please use what you already have\, or can borrow. There is no requirement to buy these things if you don’t have access to them. \nOf course we know this would be different in person\, yet being online gives you the freedom to share only what you want to share. It means you can play in your own space in a way that works for you. \nThese live\, interactive sessions are not a ‘show and tell’; there will be invitations to share what you are noticing about your experience and explore what helps or inhibits your creativity. \n  \nCourse Overview\nThe six creative sessions are inspired by the teachings and practice of Zen master Thich Nhat Hanh\, himself an artist and poet as well as the ‘Father of Western Mindfulness’. \nLoosely following the Pillars of mindfulness we will keep returning to the qualities of Beginner’s Mind\, Non-judging\, Non-striving\, Patience\, Trust\, Acceptance and Letting Go as a support for creativity. \nEach session will include a guided meditation\, a writing and creative exercise\, and opportunity for sharing or feedback on what you are noticing. You will be encouraged to continue with these exercises throughout the week. \nThis Course Offers\n\nAn opportunity to encourage wellbeing and lessen anxiety through playful creativity\nAn introduction to mindfulness meditations and practices inspired by Thich Nhat Hanh\nGuidance\, support and encouragement from an experienced mindfulness and creativity practitioner\nA chance to explore themes together with like-minded people in a supportive community\n\nWho Can Attend\nThis course is open to adults (18 and over). It is suitable for beginners and anyone wishing to gain a fuller understanding of how a combination of mindfulness and creativity can support wellbeing. \nIt is for those who think they can’t\, or don’t\, as well as those who think they can. There is no requirement for any level of artistry or mindfulness\, just a willingness to engage\, have a go and see what happens. \nCourse Leader: Lauri Bower\nThe course is led by UK Dharma Teacher Lauri Bower (Dharma name “True Mountain of Non-Fear”). \n\n  \nMy art is mainly self-taught. I attended an Art Foundation Course as a teenager and it was the best time because we had access to many different media such as printing\, photography and textiles. \nI wanted to explore a degree in textiles but the universe had other plans for me. These involved dressmaking\, raising children\, helping start a school\, teaching assistant\, a degree in Religious studies (with the intention of training as a Primary school teacher)\, sidetracked into a PhD on Thich Nhat Hanh\, teaching Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction before Be Calm\, Be Happy\, which became The Art of Zen. \nAlongside teaching mindfulness my creative side began to blossom into poems and making books. \nI’ve been meditating for nearly 40 years\, and with the Plum Village tradition since 2006. I received the 14 Mindfulness Trainings Transmission in 2014 and became a Dharma Teacher this year. \nI’ve been teaching and co-ordinating the Plum Village UK mindfulness courses since 2016 and co-wrote 2 further courses\, Looking Deeply and Living Mindfully. I enjoy offering all three courses online and in-person. Perhaps you have attended one or more with me. \nNow as a new Dharma Teacher I’m also a paper collage artist and curator of a small Art Gallery in Wetherby\, West Yorkshire\, and I happily let mindfulness and creativity sit side by side\, each one supporting the other. \nI understand the imposter syndrome that says\, ‘who am I to call myself an artist? How dare I?’ And yet I can put that to one side due to my practice of mindfulness and just be someone who plays with paper and words. \nMy creative work (original artwork\, cards\, and poetry) can be viewed on my website or Instagram page. I live in Yorkshire and practise with the York Sangha. \n  \nFeedback on Lauri’s Teaching\n“An excellent facilitator”. \n“Lauri created a nice gentle pace each week which held us all safely” \n“Lauri’s teaching style was lovely and gentle while also very informative” \n“The sensitive and compassionate way in which Lauri facilitates is very inclusive” \n“Kind\, warm and gentle delivery”. \n“Openness and authenticity” \n  \nPractical Information\nTime Commitment\nThis 6-week course is delivered in 2-hour sessions at the same time and on the same day each week. \nIn addition\, we encourage finding 20 minutes per day to devote to practising by yourself. \nThere will be an email through the week summarising what has been covered\, with help for home practice\, and what is needed for the next session. \nList of Materials\nIdeally use what you already have or can borrow. This is a suggested list echoing the items I regularly use. It isn’t necessary for you to have them all\, just what you can easily access. \n\nBefore the start of the course I will send a small pack of collage and other papers for your use.\nPaper or sketchbook – (1 for both or separate notebooks if you prefer) or loose paper.\nAs much as possible use what you have\, old book pages\, newspaper\, envelopes\, packaging papers etc.\nPencil or pen for writing (not texting or typing)\nArt materials – such as crayons\, paints\, pastels\, pens\, ink\, ink pads\nScissors\nGlue\n\nPricing\nWe offer a range of pricing options from £30 – £200 with the intention that the course is available to all. We ask that you pay whatever you can afford\, to enable these courses to continue and support Lauri’s Right Livelihood. \nPlum Village UK is a not for profit charity based in the UK\, affiliated to Thich Nhat Hanh’s Plum Village monastery in France\, and dedicated to sharing the practice of mindfulness and ethical living in the Plum Village Zen tradition. \nFrequently Asked Questions\nWhat is the refund policy?\nIf you cancel your booking at least 14 days before the start of the course we will refund your course fee. SUMMARY:Living Mindfully - Online 6 week course
DESCRIPTION:Schedule\nEvery Tuesday 7 – 9 PM UK Time\n27 Oct\n3\, 10\, 17 & 24 Nov\n1 Dec \nAbout this event\nIn this 6-week course we explore together how to bring the Five Mindfulness Trainings (5MTs) more fully into our lives\, using them as practical guidance and spiritual friends on our intended path of living mindfully. \nThere will be one weekly 2-hour session over the course of 6 weeks. \nThis is the third course in the series\, following on from The Art of Zen and Looking Deeply. \nWe offer a concentrated examination of the 5MTs in a supportive group atmosphere of people practising together. Each week is an opportunity to explore one MT and see what challenges it presents. What parts are difficult/easy to follow now? They are an ethical way of checking in to how closely we are following what we value in life\, our intentions\, and making conscious decisions instead of acting habitually\, without awareness. \nYou may enjoy this short video the short video below from Sister True Dedication explaining the importance of the 5MTs within the Plum Village tradition. Note however – the trainings are not only for young people! \n

SUMMARY:The Creator Inside - Online Retreat
DESCRIPTION:At this season of Samhain (Halloween)\, when the veil between the worlds of the living and the dead is lifted\, we turn to our ancestral roots – blood\, spirit and land – to acknowledge influences that feed our creativity. \nWe are all naturally imaginative\, creative and curious beings. This three-day online retreat is for anyone who wishes to get in touch with that vital energy. \n“In each one of us is an artist” — Thich Nhat Nanh \n  \nAs we grow up we can develop a belief that it is only professional writers\, painters or musicians who can make work that is considered worthwhile. This retreat is for rediscovering the freedom in creativity that exists in us all. \nPerhaps we need to be even more creative in finding ways to negotiate a world in which we are being manipulated. The digital revolution and the use of AI is causing more and more separation from our creative selves. Scientists and researchers now agree that having outlets for creativity is essential in maintaining our mental and physical wellbeing. \nWe all have the capacity to express ourselves. Through words\, dreams\, thoughts\, and actions. Over the three days we will enjoy exercises and games to develop writing\, drawing\, making\, and storytelling\, focusing on spontaneity\, imagination and what is important to each of us. \nWe will also offer talks\, meditation practice and group sharing\, along with space for being offline and outside. \nRetreat Leaders\nSarah Hymas\n \nSarah (Dharma name True Sharing of Benefits) is a writer\, maker\, facilitator and collaborator whose work circles her personal\, cultural and environmental ecologies. Her focus begins where she stands\, then grows outward\, upward\, down and in. Published in print\, as audio work and artistbooks. \nHer work as a mentor and coach spans decades of working with writers\, artists and other creative practitioners\, and has been specifically channelled through online and in-person creative programmes. Sarah draws on Buddhist philosophies\, Nonviolent Communication\, and the principles of permaculture design to explore how individual creativity intersects with larger systems. \nSarah’s individual and collaborative work is presented in print\, multimedia exhibits\, dance videos\, lyrics\, pyrotechnical installations\, stage\, improvised opera\, and in site-specific audio walks\, soundscapes for performance\, and participatory sculptures from found objects. \nSarah’s work has been recognised with a Hawthornden Fellowship\, AHRC funding\, ACE awards and commissions from The National Oceanography Centre and national arts organisations. Her publications include melt (Waterloo Press\, 2020)\, shortlisted for the Ledbury Munthe Second Collection Prize\, the hispering\, which won the Black Sunflowers Poetry Prize in 2020\, and artistbooks such as Lune (2013)\, runner-up in the Sabotage Awards\, and Recovery\, housed at the National Poetry Library. \nHer mentoring practice spans years of coaching writers\, artists and other creative practitioners\, and has been specifically channelled through the online and in-person creative programmes of the Imaginarium\, which she founded in 2016. Through both one to one and group work\, Sarah supports the unfolding of the creative process from imagination to manifestation\, celebrating curiosity\, uncertainty and collective wisdom. \nTeri West\n \nTeri has been a student of Thay’s since 1988 and is a founding member of the North Devon Sangha. She is a storyteller\, singer\, musician\, part-time poet and sometime clown. Teri was ordained into the Order of Interbeing in 2000\, receiving the Dharma name ‘True Door of Virtue’ (chan duc mon) and the Lamp Transmission as a Dharma teacher in 2016. \nTeri has pursued various occupations since leaving home as a teenager. By her mid-40s she began working as a professional storyteller and singer and as a member of an improvising clown group in the Nose to Nose school of clowning. She currently takes to the stage at every opportunity\, using song to take a Dharma message into the unlikely environment of the world of cabaret. She has co-led with nose to nose facilitators several ‘Clown and the Art of Mindfulness’ residential retreats for Plum Village UK and between 2018-20 three sold-out weekend courses at the European Institute for Applied Buddhism in Germany. \nTeri was fortunate enough to be invited to Plum Village in 1988 as a guest\, with friends of Thay who had worked with him in the ’70s on founding a charity for Vietnamese refugees. \nThe 1988 experience was powerful; Teri bought ‘Breathe\, you are Alive!’ which\, together with ‘The Miracle of Mindfulness’ brought Buddhism into a grounded\, practical form that Teri could relate to\, having previously read somewhat intellectual\, complicated theories. She has been a student of Thay’s ever since\, working on organising retreats\, particularly those that welcome families\, founding the thriving Westcountry Sangha. \nPractical Information\nSchedule\nThu 29 Oct 6 PM: Retreat begins\nSun 1 Nov 4 PM: Retreat ends \nPricing\nWe are offering tiered pricing to allow accessibility. Please pay as much as you are able to to support this retreat. \n£150 – Generosity\n£75 – Standard\n£30 – Supported \nAll surplus\, after Sarah’s travel to Devon and meeting Plum Village UK’s costs\, will go to the Order of Interbeing Bursary Fund. \nWe If you are unable to pay the Supported rate\, please get in touch as some bursary places may be available. \nRefunds\nWe can offer a full refund minus the Ticket Tailor fee for cancellations made up to two weeks before the retreat.
