Who does not long for peace and happiness in these turbulent and challenging times? This retreat will focus on how we can develop a meditation practice that brings us a sense of calm and ease. We will explore how traditional Buddhist teachings such as the Four Noble Truths and the Noble Eightfold Path can help us have a resilient practice that enables us to transform difficulties in our lives. We will explore how meditation can help us face challenges such as global warming and living sustainably, whilst retaining our sense of peace and happiness.

There will be opportunities to practice guided and silent meditations, sitting meditation, walking meditation, mindful eating and noble silence during our time together. Dharma talks will offer insights and highlight aspects of the practice; dharma sharings will allow us to deepen our understanding with collective Sangha wisdom.

For the first time, there will also be an opportunity to take the Five Mindfulness Trainings. This is quite special, as until not long ago Scottish practitioners wishing to receive the Trainings had to travel elsewhere. The Five Mindfulness Trainings offer concrete ways to practice mindfulness in everyday life. In a beautiful transmission ceremony we can commit ourselves to this path of compassion and understanding. So if you or your sangha friends have been considering taking the Trainings, here is your opportunity! If you already know that you are interested in taking the trainings please drop us a line for more information.

The retreat will draw on the teachings and practices of Thich Nhat Hanh and the Plum Village Community. If you would like to read about the topic before the retreat, try: For a Future to be Possible and The World We Have by Thich Nhat Hanh, and The Discourse on Happiness from the Plum Village Chanting Book.

At the end of the retreat you will be invited to give dana (donations) for the teacher. In the Buddhist tradition, teachings often are given on donation basis. It is an opportunity to practice generosity within our means and a way to show appreciations for the teachings received.
