In this series of sessions, we explore and strengthen our connection with the Earth through mindfulness, music and sound. We are part of the Earth, and the Earth is part of us. As we deepen the awareness of our interbeing through the body, listening and creativity, there will be space to relax and be playful, to become grounded and present.

Everyone is welcome to join, whether you have a musical background or not.

28 March: Embodying Sanity

This is a warm invitation to join Joe and Susanne and this growing creative sangha/community! We will continue to explore the theme of EMBODYING SANITY, celebrating our vision and experiences of sanity at a time when we witness so much insanity in the world…

Come as you are – open to engage and explore, or if you just wish to sit back, relax and listen that’s also welcome.

As usual, we’ll guide the session with meditation and songs, holding the space for reflections and creative exploration. This time, we’d also like to offer some time for us all to share our creative offerings related to the theme of ‘sanity’. If you feel inspired to write a poem or song, a haiku or short story, we’d love to hear it on the night (even if it’s just a fragment)! If you have a photo or drawing that relates to sanity, please bring it. Or if you have a favourite poem or piece of music that moves and inspires you and was written by someone else – please bring along and share.

If you’d rather just sit back, relax and listen, that’s welcome, too! And if you don’t see yourself as someone who ‘performs’, here’s a poem by Mary Oliver to sum up the spirit of the session:

It doesn’t have to be

the blue iris, it could be

weeds in a vacant lot, or a few

small stones; just

pay attention, then patch

a few words together and don’t try

to make them elaborate, this isn’t

a contest but the doorway

into thanks, and a silence in which

another voice may speak.

Bring whatever instruments you have, including drums, shakers and small percussion of any kind.

Our vision for the monthly Mindfulness & Music sessions is to over time build a sangha/community around the healing and nourishing experiences of mindfulness, creativity, music-making, deep listening, relaxation and togetherness.

SUSANNE OLBRICH is a pianist, music educator and mindfulness teacher. She discovered mindfulness practice in 1996 with Thich Nhat Hanh at Plum Village and became a Dharma teacher in 2016. Susanne loves sounds and silence and offers workshops, courses, retreats and 1-to-1 work. https://susanneolbrich.net/

JOE HOLTAWAY is a singer song writer and workshop leader. His songs and playing are inspired by a folk music upbringing and involvements in peace and social justice movements.
